You have to take it off. Take it apart..........heat some vinegar enough to submerge the 2 pieces.........turn it off and let the pieces stay in enough vinegar overnight.  You can use a pin to make sure it open........rinse it well.  It's also nice to have a spare shower head incase you have to soak it a little longe

if you have a deeper container you can add some baking soda to it...........it will bubble up to get the hard crust off.  It has to soak a while.
